Responsibly sourced ingredients
Our responsible sourcing approach ensures that we only use the very best quality ingredients for our products sourced in an ethical, sustainable and socially conscious way to ensure we are always kind to skin, kind to planet and kind to people.
Ingredients with known provenance:
We know where all of our ingredients come from. Only ingredients from our preferred suppliers are allowed to be used in our products. All our raw material suppliers are required to complete a questionnaire which includes question on their labour standards, wages, environmental impact and ethics throughout their supply chain to ensure that only ingredients that meet our high quality and sourcing standard make it into our products.
Natural & naturally derived ingredients first:
When formulating our products, we use natural or naturally derived ingredients that are from renewable sources over synthetic ingredients. All of our products have at least achieved 94% Natural Origin, calculated using the ISO standard for Natural Cosmetic Ingredients and Products.
Carefully considered synthetic ingredients:
Our products do include some synthetic ingredients such as stabilisers and preservatives where they are essential to the product safety and integrity. We carefully consider which synthetic ingredients we will allow to ensure only those that are both kind to skin and planet are allowed in our products.
Prohibited ingredients:
We have an extensive list of prohibited ingredients that cannot be used in our products. This list is regularly reviewed based on developing research and evidence. Ingredients can be added to the prohibited list for several reasons including skin compatibility, environmental & sustainability consideration.
Suitable for vegans
Our products are certified as suitable for vegans by The Vegan Society. The approval process requires an extensive review of the whole supply chain to ensure that not only does the product not contain animal derived ingredients, but that the production of the ingredients and product also does not rely on any animal derived materials.
Cruelty free
We are approved by Cruelty Free International and the Leaping Bunny Programme, the globally recognised gold standard for cruelty free cosmetics. The Leaping Bunny Programmes is the best assurances a brand can give that they are genuinely committed to removing animal testing from its supply chain.
RSPO
We do not use Palm or Palm Kernel Oil in our products, however we have conducted a full review of all of our raw materials and identified that we do have some raw materials that are derivatives of palm oil and palm kernel oil. We require our suppliers of these derivatives to ensure that these are RSPO certified and Childs Farm are associate members of RSPO. RSPO is the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil who ensure that only sustainable farming method are used to grow palm.
ECOCERT approved Colloidal Oatmeal: (Avena sativa (oat) kernel Flour)
Sourced from Finland, our oats are grown close to the arctic circle where nothing much grows. However, our oats thrive on the harsh winters and intense summers as these conditions produce a higher concentration of beta-glucan within the oats, which produces an exceptional moisturising ingredient. Due to the harsh growing conditions, very little could be successfully grown, therefore the growing and production of oat colloidal provides an income for the local community.
The oats are processed locally to ensure that transport carbon emissions are minimised, and the drying facility used as part of the processing utilises renewable energy. The patented process to produce the colloidal oatmeal does not involve the use of any chemicals and has been optimised to ensure efficient extrusion of the oat kernels. The process ensures full traceability down to batch level – this means we can trace back each batch of colloidal oatmeal to the farm it was grown on.
- Beta Glucan: This is a sugar which binds water into the skin, making it an even more effective moisturiser
- Avenanthramides: Antioxidants that exist exclusively in oats which help to reduce irritation and redness.
- Lipids and oils: Form a protective barrier in the skin in order to keep out external elements, and help to keep the skin hydrated.
Grown by a co-operative of of approximately 50 farmers which enables them to collaborate to develop more effective and safer production techniques to benefit both the growers, the environment and the consumer. This includes building and maintaining healthy soil, planting cover crops and managing water levels. To date the co-operative have published 27 scientific papers into the sustainable production techniques developed.
This co-operative helps support local farmers to optimise their production and ensure fair profitability for all farmers whilst minimising the environmental impact.
ECOCERT approved Oat Lipid Oil: (Avena sativa (oat) kernel Oil)
The oats used in our oat oil are sustainably grown in Sweden. Sweden is one of the foremost oat producing countries in the world for its high grain quality.
The oats used to produce the oat oil are a by-product of the food industry and the oil is extracted from the food waste using an environmentally friendly extraction process making this a truly sustainable ingredient. The oats are grown by a cooperative of farmers that ensures a fair profitability for all farmers. The cooperative work together to minimise their environmental impact to reach their target for reduced climate impact/ carbon footprint.
The one we use is an ECOCERT natural ingredient.
- Locks in moisture by forming a physical barrier on the skin through outstanding skin absorbency it prevents further moisture loss without leaving the skin feeling greasy.
- Rich in powerful antioxidants vitamin E and linoleic acid it helps to maintain skin’s natural balance by replacing lipids lost in everyday activities.
- Ceramide rich – similar to skin’s natural ceramide, acts as an occlusive (a skin ‘closer’) and a humectant (a substance used to attract moisture into the skin) absorbing and retaining moisture in the skin.
